The foundation stone of St John's was laid in October 1873 although it was not opened until 4 May 1876, at a cost of more than £4,500. A roofed meeting room was created in the chancel, obscuring the views of the windows, while the altar and reredos were brought forward above the chancel steps. The church was closed in 2023.
