Church of St John, Porthmadog, Gwynedd

formerly in: Caernarfonshire

Diocese of Bangor

Church (Anglican)

Church built as a chapel of ease for the town of Porthmadog, dedicated to St John the Evangelist. The foundation stone of St John's was laid in October 1873 although it was not opened until 4 May 1876, at a cost of more than £4,500. A vestry was added in 1898, and a tower was added at a cost of around £2,500, which was competed in 1900.

The architect throughout the period, who also supervised the installation of the stained glass, was E.T. Perrot, initially in partnership with Axmann. The tower and vestry were built by Evan Jones of Groeslon.

A roofed meeting room was created in the chancel, obscuring the views of the windows, while the altar and reredos were brought forward above the chancel steps. The church was closed in 2023.
