Born in Aachen, Joseph Edward (Eddie) Nuttgens was the son of a German tailor's cutter and an English mother. They moved to London in 1896. Nuttgens established his studio in the Chiltern Hills near the workshops of Eric Gill, who was an early influence, as was Christopher Whall. Nuttgens studied with Karl Parsons and was introduced to the artists working in stained glass at Lowndes & Drury's Glass House in Fulham, London. He also worked for Martin Travers as his chief assistant until 1922, and then as an assistant to Paul Woodroffe at Chipping Camden. Nuttgens' own studio was one in which new careers were nurtured, and the partnership of John Piper and Patrick Reyntiens began in his studio.
Several of his twelve children became artists and makers in various media, and his son Joseph Ambrose Nuttgens worked with him before taking over his stained glass studio after his death.
