Stained glass artist. Very little work by Leonard Matthews has been identified, but John Newman attributes a standing figure of the Virgin Mary at St Woolos Cathedral, Newport, to him, adding that he was formerly an 'artist' for Robert Newbery, whose studio made many works across south Wales. The style is not dissimilar to Newbery's, at a date when windows by Newbery were being produced at a much reduced rate compared to the immediate post-war period around 1920. It is perhaps possible that other windows of the 1920s attributed stylistically to Robert Newbery could perhaps be by Matthews. He was still working as an artist in stained glass in the 1950s, and a window designed by him on the Imperial War Memorials Register was made by the firm Cakebread, Robey & Co. of Stoke Newington.
