A well-balanced composition. The figure of Joseph is seen holding a lighted taper, emphasising the words of Simeon (Nunc Dimittis) at the Presentation of Christ in the Temple.

The figure carrying the taper is not Simeon, who appears as the figure carrying the child Jesus, but St Joseph who is also carrying the sacrifice specified - two turtle doves
