1873

Three-light window. Central image of the Nativity, with panels of the Annunciation, John leaning on Jesus' breast at the Last Supper, and the women addressed by the angel at the empty tomb on Easter morning. Figures also of Raphael, with children, and probably Michael, with sword and trumpet - a reference to the Judgement. Angel choir singing the 'Gloria' at the birth of Christ, and angel musicians in the tracery. A rich composition.

size: 50 cm (each light) [approx]
firm/studio: Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co.
designer: Edward Coley Burne-Jones

Church of St Michael, Forden, Powys
east wall of the chancel (window number: I)

Inscription: To the Glory of God in memory of Robert John Harrison Vicar of Forden who died September 4 1872.

'Gloria in excelsis deo in terra'.

The window seems to be made up from unrelated cartoons. St Raphael and St Michael are identical to designs of 1873, attributed to Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919), Burne-Jones' studio assistant, but worked up from Burne-Jones' drawings. The figures appear among the Angels of the Hierarchy in the chapel of Jesus College, Cambridge.

The cartoon for the Annunciation panel is at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, and was also used at St Martin's-on-the-hill, Scarborough.
