about 1860

A three-light window with the crucified Christ between Mary and John, with Moses and the brazen serpent below, and angels holding the text: 'He became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross'.

firm/studio: William Wailes

Church of St Mary, Angle, Pembrokeshire
east wall of the chancel

The window is attributed to Michael and Arthur O'Connor in The Buildings of Wales: Pembrokeshire, according to information from Martin Harrison. However, the style is closer to that of William Wailes, who also made windows in the church, and whose style is also recognisable in the windows of the Fisherman's Chapel.

A conventional representation of the Crucifixion, but here accompanied by its Old Testament type, the raising of the brazen serpent by Moses in the wilderness (Numbers 21:9). The same juxtaposition is found on the mosaic in St Davids Cathedral, and both scenes occupy the upper and lower panels of the east window of the Church of St Mary, Tenby, where the window was also made by Wailes.
