Given in memory of John and Elizabeth Mirehouse d.1850 and d.1880.The stated text is Isaiah 9:6, taken as a prophecy of the birth of Jesus (a text popularized by the libretto of Handel's 'Messiah'). The adoration of the shepherds (Luke 2) includes a figure carrying a sheep on his shoulders, probably a reference to Jesus' parable of the lost sheep (Luke 15:6). The composition also includes the star, more appropriately associated with the adoration of the magi (Matthew 2:9-10). On the roof of the stable are two doves, a reference to the offering made by the poor at the Temple at the birth of the firstborn (Luke 2:24) and associated with the presentation of Christ.
