late nineteenth century or early twentieth century

Three-light window with the standing figure of Christ among a crowd of men, women and children, some holding palms.

firm/studio: Heaton, Butler & Bayne

Church of St Dyfnog, Llanrhaeadr
north wall of the north nave

The style is very close to that of Heaton, Butler & Bayne around the turn of the century. The window has no memorial or dedicatory inscription, but is probably the window given in memory of Thomas Hughes (d. 1880) by his children, as recorded by D.R. Thomas.

Text beneath the scene: 'Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord' (Matthew 21:9).

The text is from the passage relating the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, although Christ is not riding on a donkey, as is usually the case when depicting this scene. However, some of the crowd wave palms, which were cut down and placed in his path according to Matthew 21:8. The scene perhaps depicts Christ's reception in the temple 'and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David' (Matthew 21:15).
