Peter Raising Tabitha
detail from Christ with Children Brought by their Mothers and the Raising of Tabitha
about 1868
Two-light window with scenes in each light. In the left-hand light Christ is seated with women and children around him. In the right-hand light Peter stands (identified by his halo), while a woman sits up on her bed, supported by two other figures.
size: 46 cm (width of each light)designer: Henry Holidayfirm/studio: James Powell & SonsChurch of All Saints, St Thomas, Swanseasouth wall of the south aisle (window number: sV)
Dennis Hadley's list of windows from the Powell's archive at the V&A associates the design of the window with Henry Holiday.
The window has suffered considerable paint loss, and has been partly restored.
Given in memory of Penelope Frances Grenfell (died 8 January 1868) by her friends.Peter is identified in his halo, and this suggests that the healing scene is perhaps the raising of Tabitha (Dorcas). However, Peter performs this healing without others in the room, and the scene does not accord exactly with the narrative in the book of Acts.
