St Perpetua

Single-light window depicting Perpetua, in chains, handing her baby to two men.

Given in memory of Sophia Jane, wife of Robert Taunton Raikes. She died 7 April 1872, aged 27. A further plaque below the window commemorates their son, Second Lieutenant Frederick Monro Railes, of the Brecknockshire Battalion South Wales Borderers, who was born 1 April 1872. He was killed in action in Mesopotamis in 1917.The saint is often depicted with her slave, Felicitas, although she is not included in this scene. The image of the saint handing over her baby before her martyrdom is a reflection of the family's grief at the death of a young mother after the birth of a son.
