Christ with the Chalice and Host
detail from Christ with the Elements of the Eucharist and The Agony in the Garden
probably 1860s
Three-light window. Scenes showing Christ at prayer, with the elements of the eucharist, and kneeling with a vision of a chalice. Decorated panels above and below with biblical texts and symbols including (below) Agnus Dei, cross with crown of thorns and pelican feeding her chicks.
Church of St Michael, Abergele, Conwynorth wall
The window shares similarities with windows by James Ballantine, such as nearby at Tremeirchion and Llanelian-yn-Rhos.
Texts: 'My soul is exceeding sorrowful even unto Death' (Matthew 26:38); 'As often as ye eat this bread and drink this cup ye do shew the Lord's death till he come' (1 Corinthians 11:26); 'O my Father if this cup may not pass away except I drink it thy will be done' (Matthew 26:42).The texts above the scenes in the outer lights imply that both scenes are depictions of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane.
