English artist and poet. Dante Gabriel Rossetti came to prominence as a founder member of the Pre-Raphaelite circle in 1848, and remained influential among the second generation artists inspired by the movement, notably Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris. Initially strongly influenced by medievalism, his later oil paintings from around 1860 are often deeply sensual female portraits.
