Seated figure of Mary with the infant Christ, and landscape behind and chid angels below playing musical instruments. One of the angels facing out from the window is probably a portrait.
artist (after): Giovanni Bellinifirm/studio: probably
Burlison & GryllsChrist Church, Welshpool, Powyssouth wall of the nave
The image is a version of Giovanni Bellini's Madonna degli Alberetti (Madonna of the trees) of 1487, from the Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice, one of numerous paintings of the Virgin and Child. Despite the Renaissance influence of the work, the window may be the work of Gothic Revival firm Burlison & Grylls, as it shares some characteristics with a further window in the south aisle that is probably by the firm.
Given by the Fourth Earl of Powis in memory of his wife Violet, Countess of Powis and sixteenth Baroness D'arcy de Knayth (died 1929). (ObjectID=724 ImageID=7985) Original File Name=Welshpool_DSC7810A.jpgRecord added by Martin Crampin. Last updated on 12-01-2012
