Texts: three couplets written by Damian Walford Davies, one in French (the language of the royal court), Welsh and English.
With an underlying design structure based on the map of north Wales, the three windows tell the story of Edward I and the Princes of Gwynedd. The window was inspired by medieval glass fragments in north Wales (such as those from Llangystennin Church, and Llanrhychwyn) and carvings from churches and other medieval buildings in Gwynedd, such as Plas Mawr House in Conwy. The imagery is inspired by iconography in medieval manuscripts and stained glass of the period as well as some contemporary images, including what is possibly the first mobile phone to appear in a stained glass window.
The piece was designed and made by Linda Norris and Rachel Phillips in response to an interpretation commission for Cadw. The artists aim was to use medieval techniques and inspiration to create a contemporary artwork. The panels are installed as secondary glazing within the original thirteenth century glazing groove.
