mid-1950s

Four-light window. Two scenes across two lights show (on the left) Christ with an apostle (?John) and his mother Mary and a group outside a house, and (on the right) two saints standing while three kneeling figures receive the Holy Spirit, who descends in the form of a dove in rays of golden light.

The symbols of the four evangelists are shown above, with angels in cinquefoils and the Agnus Dei on a rainbow in the main upper roundel.

Church of All Saints, Penarth, Vale of Glamorgan
east wall of the chancel

Text below the left-hand scene: 'Whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.' (Matthew 12:50); and below the right-hand scene: 'Until the day break, and the shadows flee away.' (Song of Solomon, 2:17, 4:6).

The scene on the left is in memory of Anne Elizabeth Carter (died 1903), and that on the right is given in memory of Samuel Arthur Brain, a former churchwarden (died 1905).

The window is effectively two commissions, whose subjects do not easily relate to one another and are both unusual choices, and particularly unusual for an east window.
