about 1902

Two-light window with women clothing and giving bread to children. Sacred heraldry above of a cross, flaming heart and anchor, symbolising faith, hope and charity (love) and angels below.

size: 50 cm (width of each light) [approx]
firm/studio: Robert J. Newbery
patron: William Thomas Lewis

Church of St Elvan, Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taff
north wall

Texts: 'Now abideth Faith Hope and Charity these three; but the greatest of these is Charity' (1 Corinthians 13:13); held by angels in the lower panels: 'Her children arise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her' (Proverbs 31:28).

Inscription: 'To the Glory of God and in loving memory of Anne the Wife of Sir W.T. Lewis Bart, the Mardy Aberdare by her sorrowful Husband and Children.' A portrait of Anne is included at the foot of the window. The same portrait is also found in the east window at St Issels, near where she died at Hean Castle in Pembrokeshire, and the two scenes are repeated in the lower panels of that window.

As this is one of three similar adjoining windows by the maker, another of which was also given by W.T. Lewis (in 1913), perhaps all three were given at this time, perhaps making the window later than the time of Anne Lewis' death in 1902.
