An Angel Greets the Three Women at the Empty Tomb
detail from Scenes from the Gospels
1877
Three-light window with seven scenes. Centre light (top to bottom): the Ascension, the angel greeting the three women at the empty tomb and Christ with two women, probably Mary and Martha at the gate of Bethany; left-hand light: Christ healing a girl (above) and a seated woman teaching children (below); right-hand light: Christ's head anointed as he sits at a meal (above) and Christ teaching with two women, probably Martha and Mary (below).
size: 50 cm (width of each light) [approx]firm/studio: Ward & HughesChurch of St Cadfarch, Penegoes, Powyseast wall of the chancel
Attributed to Heaton Butler & Bayne in The Buildings of Wales: Powys but the style is clearly that of Ward & Hughes. A newspaper report in the Cambrian News & Merioneth Standard, 2 November 1877, also names the maker.
Given by friends in memory of Anne Pughe (died 1874) and her daughter Maria Jane Pughe (died 1872). Both were benefactors of the new church and school. The window and its neighbour in the south wall were both present when the church was re-opened after restoration on 25 October 1877.
