about 1522-1526

Large single-light window containing the scene showing the circumcision of Christ by a priest in the temple, within a decorative surround. Mary and Joseph are joined by another female figure, possibly Anne, and two further male figures are depicted in the background.

size: 95 cm (width)

Church of St Mary and St Michael, Llanarth, Monmouthshire
(liturgical) south wall of the nave

Originally from Steinfeld Abbey, the scene was in the left-hand light of a three-light window, also depicting the Nativity and the journey to Bethlehem (the scenes were designed to read from right to left around the cloister). The Nativity scene survives at Blickling Hall, Norfolk, where the head of Joseph is very similar to that in this panel.
