The Risen Christ
detail from The Risen Christ with Saints
1893
Three-light window. Christ is shown at the centre with Mary and John below, and standing figures of James and Peter at either side.
size: 45 cm (width of central light) [approx]firm/studio: Savell & Co.Church of St James, Dale, Pembrokeshireeast wall of the chancel (window number: I)
Given in memory of Walter Bellairs Lloyd Philipps of Dale Castle (died 1888), by his mother, Elizabeth Anne, a native of Canada. The grouping of Christ, his mother Mary, and John in the centre light is reminiscent of the two bystanders most commonly shown at either side of the cross, but shown here with Christ after the Resurrection, witnessing Christ in Glory, or perhaps Christ ascending to heaven in the clouds. Their inclusion in the central light makes way for the two saints to be depicted in the outer lights, including James (Jacobus), the patron of the church.
